The Search for Meaning
Meaning escapes me,
escapes the unfamiliarity of this room of familiar objects -
my life against a wall.
Childish books lean uncomfortably on thicker volumes
that have ditched innocence and instead search,
among acres of words, for some understanding.
Arrangements of twenty-six letters that evoke tears, or laughter,
or change -
Just a few of which I strain to see printed
in unremarkable ink and
on insignificant paper.
Choices that I face and yet evade
form barricades before my weary eyes, sleepless at 3am -
the piercing sounds of their urgency accompanied
by mosquito voices of those who have decided, on my behalf,
what is best
